Chipmaker AMD posts record $13.4B quarter as data-centre chip sales nearly double

AMD says third-quarter revenue rose 45% from a year earlier to a record $13.4B. Its data-centre unit made a record $8.5B, up 97%, on sales of its EPYC server processors and new Instinct MI450 AI chips. Gaming revenue fell 40% to $773M. CNBC reports results beat analysts' estimates, AMD forecast fourth-quarter revenue above estimates, and its shares rose more than 7% after hours. Chief executive Lisa Su said she expects growth to speed up as AMD scales production of its Helios rack systems and 'Venice' chips.

Why it matters: AMD is winning a growing share of AI data-centre spending, while its gaming business shrinks.
