Intel's server chip sales jump 78%, but a weak forecast drops its shares 16%
Intel says third-quarter revenue was $16.5 billion, up 21% from a year earlier. Its Data Center and AI unit grew 78% to $7.3 billion, which CFO David Zinsner called the strongest data centre growth in 15 years. Sales of PC chips fell 5% to $8.1 billion, and the foundry unit, which makes chips, grew 58% to $6.7 billion. Intel expects fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion and says the PC slowdown will last at least through the first half of next year. CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the priority is more supply for its Xeon server chips. On the earnings call, Intel said its budget Wildcat Lake laptop chips are sold out, The Verge reports. Tom's Hardware reports Intel is taking some Panther Lake laptop chip capacity offline to build more Granite Rapids server chips, and that its next desktop chips, Nova Lake, will be the first to use its 18A-P manufacturing process. CNBC reports the forecast was below estimates and the shares fell more than 16% after hours.
Affects you: Intel is shifting factory capacity toward server chips, and its cheap laptop chips are sold out. Combined with high memory prices, budget laptops may stay scarce or pricey for a while.
