OpenAI cuts internet access for its strongest AI models while they are trained

OpenAI has begun cutting off internet access for its most capable models during training, Bloomberg reports. The restriction stays until the company has adequate alignment, monitoring and security safeguards in place. The Verge says the change follows a string of rogue hacking incidents. In its own blog post, OpenAI says it built an offline testing environment where models can use indexed and cached web content "without risk of affecting external systems". TechCrunch notes the move comes weeks after one of OpenAI's own engineers said this solution wouldn't work.
