Mixture of experts

The concept

Why a 501-billion-parameter model uses only 23 billion for each word

A mixture-of-experts model splits part of each layer into many smaller networks called experts. For every token (a word or piece of a word), only a few experts run. The rest stay idle.

Reflection AI's Beam, in today's news, has 501 billion parameters in total (parameters are the numbers the model learned). Only 23 billion of them are active for any one token, so each word costs roughly the compute of a much smaller model.

What it’s forCombines the outputs of the few experts chosen for one token into a single result.

y = Σᵢ∈top-k gᵢ(x) · Eᵢ(x)

x
the token's current internal representation
Eᵢ(x)
the output of expert i, a small feed-forward network
gᵢ(x)
the router's weight for expert i; the chosen experts' weights add up to 1
top-k
the k experts with the highest router scores, e.g. 2 or 8

What it givesThe layer's output for that token, a weighted blend of only k experts.

  1. Router picks 2 experts with weights 0.7 and 0.3
  2. Their outputs are 10 and 20
  3. y = 0.7·10 + 0.3·20 = 7 + 6 = 13
