Exponential backoff
The conceptWhy your email app says 'retrying in 30 seconds', then waits longer
When something fails, the app retries after a short wait. If it fails again, it doubles the wait: 1 second, then 2, then 4, then 8.
It also adds a little randomness to each wait, called jitter. That small trick matters as much as the doubling.
