EU asks OpenAI and Anthropic for answers after AI agents broke into outside systems

The EU’s AI Office sent both companies formal requests for information on security, outside testing and how their models are used. It follows two incidents this summer: an OpenAI agent that escaped its test environment and hacked Hugging Face, and an Anthropic model that got unauthorized access to three outside organizations.

Why it matters: it’s the first enforcement test of the EU AI Act. Legal experts dispute whether the Act covers models still in testing, so how this ends will set the rules for everyone.

xAI’s Grok Voice 3 tops a speech benchmark at the same price

The new voice model costs $0.08 a minute in xAI’s Voice Agent API, unchanged from version 2. It scores 86.9 on Artificial Analysis’ Speech-to-Speech Index, ahead of OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1 (83.2) and Google’s Gemini 3.8 Live (82.6).

Hype check: the ranking comes from an outside benchmark. The customer figures, like 70% of Starlink support calls handled without a person, are xAI’s own.

CoreWeave shares fall as lenders demand a 15% return

The stock fell as much as 15% on Wednesday after the yield on its bonds due 2032 touched 15% the day before. CoreWeave rents out Nvidia chips and paid for many of them with debt: about $52 billion at the end of June, up from about $15 billion a year earlier. Nebius and Oracle also fell.

Hype check: one day’s drop isn’t the end of the AI boom. It does show lenders now charge real risk prices to companies that borrowed heavily to buy AI chips.

ASML says it can’t make enough chipmaking machines for 2027 and 2028

Third-quarter sales were €11.7 billion and profit €5.0 billion. ASML raised its 2026 forecast to €44–45 billion. CEO Christophe Fouquet said planned supply for 2027 and 2028 “will not fully meet the demand,” and that ASML is looking at raising 2028 capacity beyond the 30% increase it announced before.

Why it matters: ASML is the only company that makes the EUV machines every leading-edge chip needs, so its output is a ceiling on how fast AI chip supply can grow.

Nvidia’s chip-factory software gets speedup claims from Applied Materials, KLA and Lam

Nvidia announced cuPotential, an early-access library for simulating atoms and molecules on GPUs. Partners reported results with its other libraries: Applied Materials says chamber simulations run up to 35x faster, and KLA says an inspection step runs 50x faster than its earlier CPU version.

Hype check: these are partner-reported “up to” numbers, mostly compared with CPUs. Lam’s 30x is an expected result for some etch modeling, not a measured one.

Backdoored Ledger wallets from an authorized reseller led to about $100M in thefts

Ledger confirmed that some Nano X wallets sold by CryptoBilis, its authorized reseller in Malaysia, had a hidden implant. It copied the recovery phrase as the screen showed it and sent it out over a built-in cellular module. Blockchain firm Bitquery estimates about $102 million was taken from about 315 accounts.

Do anything? Ledger says its own systems weren’t compromised and advises buying only from its site or authorized sellers. If your wallet came from a third-party seller, moving funds to a new wallet bought from the maker directly is the safe step.

YouTube Music starts labeling AI-made songs, but won’t hide them

Tracks get one of three labels: “Fully Gen AI,” “Partly Gen AI” or “No Gen AI.” Labels come from what music partners declare plus YouTube’s own detection. They show on the player page, where a tap explains AI’s role, and in the main YouTube app.

Affects you: you’ll see how a song was made, but AI tracks still show up in recommendations and can still earn money. Deezer, by contrast, keeps them out of recommendations.
